Kostet imo knapp 90...

I'm aware of at least one 3D scanner manufactured by HP called "Top Shot". It uses an array CCD instead of a linescan CCD + scanning mechanism, so it should also capture images faster, although the effective resolution is likely not quite as high as a traditional flat-bed scanner. The downside/upside (depending on your needs) is that the scanner is part of an all-in-one printer.
I've casually played with one and came away impressed, but I don't have any in-depth experience with the product.

My gf has done some stuff on our $100 Canon 4400F (DE: 20-30 gebraucht, 40 neu). It works fine for photos too, just check levels and sharpen a bit. For negatives cheap flatbeds are not that hot but it depends what kind of quality you need. Web sizes and small prints are ok, but even 8x10 is pushing it. (from 35mm).
Epson V700 (and newer) seems to be the best all-around flatbed as can be seen from the price tag.

use a Microtek i900. It produces some beautiful scans. One of the nice features is that the cover is removable. So is the glass for cleaning. Of course you should always protect the glass with clear mylar or acetate. I would also recommend SIlverfast AI instead of the Microtek software. It's much faster and, more importantly, has much more sophisticated control.

It sounds like the Epson Expression 10000XL would be much better suited for my purposes.
I did read about it, and it seems to offer much better focusing control and the depth of field.

Have you tried the HP Scanjet 4670 See-Through scanner? It is supposed to let you take pictures of objects by simply placing the scanner on top and as such is not expected to be perfectly level... I can't confirm this though, only that I read it somewhere.
anderes review sagt, nicht besonders tief

Following up on my V30 purchase. The scanner has a 'deep focus' -- I can stand 10 cm away from the bed and still be in focus -- and unfortunately it has a lot of distortion. I can't tell whether this is due to the physical construction of the device or to some correction in the software; it may be trying to lay flat the parts that are further away.

The Epson Perfection V30 can handle documents that measure up to 8.5 x 11.7 inches. The unit attaches to a PC or Mac via USB 2.0, and is therefore capable of transfer speeds up to 40 times faster than the Xerox 7600, which has a USB 1.1 port. The Epson scans at densities up to 4,800 x 9,600 dots per inch (dpi), which is sufficient to capture film and film negatives without deterioration. Unfortunately the product has no transparent materials adapter to conveniently take advantage of its film-worthy scan density. The impressive dpi range is nevertheless useful because any high-density scan will enlarge without noticeable deterioration. And crops and subsets of a high-density image will expand without being perceived by the human eye as degraded. Included software supports Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to allow the editing of scanned text from within a word processor. Photo editing software supports the restoration of faded photographs.
V30 The flatbed scanner lid is designed to lift 180 degrees to accommodate 3D objects, photo albums and scrapbooks. Because the scanning engine is a Charge Coupled Device (CCD), scans with a depth of field up to half an inch are possible. By way of contrast, the Canon CanoScan LiDE 200 and the Xerox 7600 have a depth of field measured in millimeters because their scanning engines use a newer alternative technology called Contact Image Sensors (CIS).

Someone suggested the Epson 3170 here has a depth of field around 1.7 in.
neupreis 2003-2009 150-200, heute 20-70 gebraucht

I scan jewelry periodically with an Epson V750 and the depth of field is satisfactory. (800)

A Cruse scanner would be perfect for this. The quality of the scans are amazing.

The best DOF I have ever experienced was from a Nikon AX1200 (re-badged Umax) mid-90s; it had surprising depth. Various Epsons since have been OK and focusable (focus stacking? Smiley, but have read that a lot of the Canon LIDE scanners were very shallow.

Because contact image sensor technology allows a depth of field measured in millimeters, large format scanners that use the technology are not ideal for scanning anything that isnt in close contact with the scan bed. For scanographic applications and scans of opened books, the Plustek OpticPro A320 is a better large format scanner than the Mustek Scan Express A3 USB 2400 Pro because the Plustek employs color charge-coupled device technology, which supports a depth of focus approaching half an inch.

Epson perfection 3170 is $100 or less and works great! It is often recommended by the pros especially for those of us just starting out. I got so excited about scanning I created a site to share as much as I could learn.
