Quicksteps
Here are a number of quicksteps which will guide you through the process of finding double files on your system.
Step 1: Select the folders you want to check
You can easily select individual directories by clicking the small folder icon on the right side in the directory editbox. Add the directories to the folder list by clicking the button Add to List. Big directory trees can be selected at once by selecting the root and checking Include Subdirectories.
Step 2: Refine the folder list
You can now refine the search by de-selecting certain folders that you do not want to check. For example, folders that you already did check, or folders that you want to keep as a backup.
Just highlight the folders you want to remove from the list by clicking with your mouse and then select „Remove From List“. The folders are NOT deleted! They are only removed from the list.
If you want to run a check on a certain list more than once, then you can save the list with by clicking „Store List“. At a later date you can then retrieve the list with „Retrieve List“.
You can also clear the complete list and start with step 1 again by clicking „Clear List“
Step 3: Find Duplicates
By pressing the button Find Duplicates, the application will start detecting, indexing and checking files. This process can take quite some time, depending on the amount of files. The statistics pane shows the progress. You can cancel the process by pressing the cancel button.
Step 4: Select files which will be deleted
You can either manually select files in the Identical Files pane (by clicking in combination with [shift] key), or select files automatically by using one of the select buttons. When hoovering over a file, individual file information is displayed in the File Info pane at the bottom.
Step 5: Delete files
Finally, you can delete the selected files by pressing the button Delete Dialog This will display a confirmation dialog with an overview of the files to be deleted. You can still press No or Cancel at this point, to abort the operation. If you press Yes, the files will be permanently deleted.
Safety options
There are some safety options that are important to understand; you can protect windows folders, skip hidden files, and opt to leave at least one original.
The folder list specifies which directory to add to the list of folders which will be checked. Select a directory by typing the complete path or by pressing the folder icon on the right of the text. A dialog will appear in which you can select a directory.
You can add the folder to the Directories pane by pressing the button Add to List. If the checkbox Include subdirectories is checked, all subdirectories will also be added.
The Directories pane shows a list of directories which will be checked for identical files.
You can add directories by selecting them first in the Directory editbox and then pressing Add to List.
You can refine the search by de-selecting certain folders that you do not want to check.
The Find Duplicates button starts the search for duplicate files.
First, it detects all files in the directories which are listed in the folder list. Then, all these files are indexed, and finally, all the files are checked.
Files which are identical in content (same size and contents), but possibly have different filenames, file dates and locations, are displayed on the same line in the Identical Files pane. When hoovering over the file, all other individual file information is displayed in the File Info pane. Selected files are highlighted. Doubleclicking a file will execute the shell open function (for instance: open your viewer if it is an image).
The process of finding identical files can be time-consuming. Therefore, the application provides a Cancel button with which this process can be cancelled.
You can safely press the Delete Dialog Button during a scan, and delete files. The scan will continue after you close the dialog.
Press the Cancel Button if you want to quit the indexing process of directories or files. You can still work with the partial list after cancelling. The biggest files are always on top in the Identical Files pane, so even with cancelling halfway you can still clean a considerable large portion of double files.
Press the Help button to present a help screen. Here you can choose to go though the quicksteps or look at the reference.
Selecting Files
Selecting files can be done manually or automatically. The files are highlighted to indicate that they are selected. The Statistics pane shows the number of selected files and the associated total diskspace.
Selecting files manually
You can manually select a square of files from the Identical Files matrix by clicking and dragging, or using the [shift] key.
Selecting files automatically
You can use one of four methods, by pressing the corresponding button:
1. Select All
The button Select All will select all double files. Use this option with care!
2. Select by Dir
The button Select by Dir will select the files which are located in the directories which are selected in the Directories pane. This option can be useful if you want to delete all double files from a specific directory.
3. Select Pattern
The button Select Pattern will select all files which abide a certain pattern. This option can be very useful if you want to delete all double files which belong to a series of files. With the buttons < and > you can make the pattern less or more stringent. The change in selection can be viewed live.
4. Select by Folder
This option is ideal to select newly added duplicate files. Suppose you have added new files to your system, e.g. in a folder:
C:\NewDownloads.
The next thing you want to do is to verify if there are any duplicates in this new folder. Select all the folders you want to check in the directories pane, e.g.:
C:\AllFiles
C:\NewDownloads
Now, just highlight C:\NewDownloads and hit the button [Select by Folder]. All the (new) duplicate files that are in C:\NewDownloads are now going to be selected and you can easily delete them all!
Option: leave at least one
The checkbox ‚leave at least one‘ prevents the user from deleting all double files. This option is for instance very useful if you have two partial series of files, and want to keep at least one from either if they do not overlap completely.
The Statistics Pane shows information about the progress of the indexing and checking process, as well as information about the selected files and information about the deleted files and the restored diskspace.
The File Info Pane shows information about the current file in the Identical Files matrix by hoovering your mouse over it. The info pane shows Windows filename, filesize in bytes, date and time of last modification, status and the location (directory) of the file.
Press the Delete Dialog Button if you want to delete the files you selected in the files pane. The files are not directly deleted, you are first presented with a list of files you plan to delete and only when you click on OK in this dialog box the files are deleted from the disk. If you select the action ‚Use Recycle Bin‚, the files are placed in the recycle bin and this enables you to put them back if they were deleted accidentally.
You can switch off Effects and Hints if you understand how the utility works and you feel that the hints and effects are annoying you. This product should be as stress-free as possible!
If the Use Recycle Bin radio item is selected, the files which are deleted are placed in the recycle bin (trashcan). You can at a later moment always open the recycle bin and restore your files, unless you‘ve emptied the recycle bin manually.
If you want the files to go to an archive folder or to be deleted without recovery option, then select an other action.
Caution: When you analyse network drives, the „Recycle Bin“ option does not work!
If you select skip hidden files then all files with the „Hidden“ attribute will be left out of the scan. This ensures that these (usually quite important) files are never deleted.
If you select Protect Windows Folders then your windows folders will automatically be left out of the scan and not show up in the folder list. This ensures that you will never delete files from these folders.
Why
Deleting files from your Windows folders can lead to a disaster! For instance: unrecoverable system, or blue screens! The files in these folders are usually critical for the correct functioning of your system and should never be deleted unless you are an expert.
You can opt to leave at least one original file. This option will guarantee that you never delete all of the duplicates.
This option however is not a guarantee that you are doing a 100% safe deletion, because some files are neccesary in more than one location. This option can be very helpful when you want to get rid of duplicate images or MP3 files.
Delete Files Dialog Box
File List
This dialog box shows a list of files that are candidates to be deleted. You can choose to remove files from this list by selecting them (with [shift] and mouseclick, or [ctrl] and mouseclick), and then clicking „Remove selected files from the list“. The files will not show anymore in the list and thus will not be deleted.
Action
You can opt to put the files in the Recycle Bin, move them to an archive folder or delete them without backup option.
Caution: When you analyse network drives, the „Recycle Bin“ option does not work!
Registration Dialog Box
In this dialog box you can type in the registration key that was sent to you by email when you registered. Just type in the key exactly as it has been given to you in the email message. You can also use Copy and Paste to copy the key into the „Registration key“ field.
If you did not yet purchase a registration key, then you can obtain a registration key online within minutes. The registration fee for „Check Identical Files“ is US $19.95.

Other related software
We often get these requests from C.I.F. users:
“ Is it possible to create a listing or export file from the files listed as duplicates?
“ Is it possible to check for similar images (so not a binary duplicate, but just nearly identical, perhaps downscaled or altered slightly)
In both cases the answer currently is „no“, but you can try C.I.F.‘s sister product which is capable of doing this, ABC-View Manager:

This general image and file cataloguer requires a bit more of a learning curve but is very powerful and can (among a lot of other things) perform the two tasks above.
